Useful Tips
Safety - by Anon from Durban
Be very, very careful when driving on the freeway and especially at night. The roads are not lit and there are many Africans walking on the side of and crossing the road. A new law has just been put in place here whereby you no longer automatically get off if you hit someone on the freeway (it was previously such a frequent occurance that no one would batter an eyelid) so please be careful!
Parking - by from
Dont park on the wrong side of the road. I did on my first visit and it cost me £15. Why is there no kind of Highway issued with a hire vehicle.

if you ever go to Cape Town situated on the south-western tip of South Africa i urge you to make a point of driving along 'Chapman’s Peak' Drive. This is a road along the mountains overlooking the sea, the view is absolutely spectacular. The pass has just recently been opened again so there is a toll fee but I assure you its worth it.

Whether you're driving in sunny South Africa or anywhere in the world, HEED THE GREATEST DRIVING TIP I WAS GIVEN BY MY FATHER: On the day I obtained my driver's licence, my Dad told me one thing and one thing only. "Son, whenever you're driving a vehicle, the car to which you MUST always pay attention - is the car behind the one IMMEDIATELY in front of you. Period!" Follow Dad's tip and enjoy driving safely anywhere in the world.
Speed limit - by Sharon from JHB
Stay off the pavements, as the Taxi's frequent these.. Stay our the fast lane, as the Taxi's will bulldoze over you if you are moving too slow, stay out the slow lane, as the taxi's reqard this as 'their' lane and stop where ever and when ever they please... Hazard lights are no indication of any emergancy for a taxi - it is purely a curteousy indication on their behalf that they are allowed to do as they please. Please note: Taxi driver waving gun has right of way in any situation.

I am a regular visitor to South Africa. Do observe the speed limits in the country. Fines are heavy as I know from personal experience. It is also a big hassle to pay the fine. You either have to go back to the Court in the area where the speeding took place and pay cash or find someone to get you a bank cheque. As a visitor you cannot get a bank cheque! They will not accept credit card payments.
Traffic - by Michiel from Australia
Just a correction on the previous submission by Dominic. The 4-way stop doesn't work in a clockwise direction, but rather on a first come, first serve basis.
Speed limit - by Dave from Sydney
Make sure if at all possible to keep moving at all times while driving. It's a lot harder to car-jack a moving car than it is a stationary one.
Traffic - by Dominic from Australia
You sometimes find quite busy four-way intersections with stop signs on all four corners. Regardless of whether turning or going straight on, everyone takes turns one by one, going in a clockwise direction.
Safety - by Charmaine from England
Definatley don't leave cell phones or handbags in clear vision of any pedestrians when driving. Keep away from the local "taxi's" as they are quite menacing in peak traffic!
Speed limit - by Laura from Newcastle
Driving in SA is defiinately not for the faint hearted, no one seems to know or care about speed limits and it would seem that anybody can get a drivers licence.
Parking - by George from Durban
Hi fom fun filled durban, just thought that I should let you all know that parking is easy and safe in Durbs!
Speed limit - by Fred from Johannesburg
This is one of those cases where it depends on who you are and what you drive, the speed limit is 60kph in rural and 120kph on highways and national roads, but it would seem that if you drive a BMW or Merc then the speed limit is flat out no matter where you are.
